Good Post..!!
MHO - Great country...! But we should not live in the Past. I mean in the Old glory.!
So what if Aryabhatta invented '0'.
Why are there some many '0's in India today?
Not many ppl are living in the past Narayanan, everyone are moving super fast and so many ppl (including me) dont know much facts, facts like India has such Rich history.
I have a couple of "Vellai Kaara" friends who thought that the movie "6th Sense" was directed by Steven Spielberg. They wonder how do I speak English and if I was born outside India!
This info about India's history reached me thru a forwarded email and I took the opportunity to publicize it, basically to throw some light on it.
I dont have the rights nor am I eligible/capable/appropriate to talk ill about India (like the 0's you've mentioned) I dont even live there.
I guess we should first think about what have we done to change the 0's to 1's and then complain.
We worry & complain, but do not do anything productive to improve/change it.
But, I think India is coming up pretty well these days.
Thanks for your Comment though.

Did you try to spend a bit of time to check out the veracity of some of the claims made? (I did and some of the claims are without much facts to back it up!)
I am not saying we Indians aren't doing well - but most of the stats really doesn't mean much.
India has produced may be 100'000 IITians of which over 40% are in US! Should I be saying "wow!" to that or what?
Having travelled around the world - I haven't seen any other country that has the kind of abject poverty like India rubbing shoulders with incredible wealth.
I am not ashamed of being an Indian, in fact I am rather proud - but not because of these facts. But rather because of who I am!
There is a long way for us to go before we all can be truly proud of being from a country where no one needs to fight with a street dog to get a piece of bread.
Pramod, I'd like to ask the same question I asked Mr. Narayanan.
What did YOU do for your country?
We, the ppl make the country, constructing it and destroying it is in our hands.
One of the main reasons for India still being a "Developing Country" is because of lack of unanimity, Indians talking ill about India; its become a fashion among many Indians living overseas to put down their own country. I've seen many people saying to their peers (from other countries) that India is a bad place to live, the weather is pathetic, the people there suck, the pollution, the traffic, this that…
Its like a Child complaining about its own Mother. We should cleanse our country or at least stop being derisive. Complaining alone will not work. Actions speak better.
If so many IIT-ans go abroad then blame the society that considers studying abroad is Prestigious. This poison tree is grown inside the children right from their birth.
But this attitude is slowly changing. Many of my friends now consider the option of going back and working in India. Things are much better there now. Cows always go towards greener pasture, its becoming greener at our side too.
Things will change, for Sure; you & I may not be there to see it, but it will happen. The big Flush will happen.
Until then, do your part, do as much you can to give a better country and a better world to the future, stop complaining, change your attitude towards your own country. Only if you respect your country will others do the same.
